San Giorgio di Valpolicella - Wordless # 8

3 years ago, my hubby and I went to Italy to visit the wine district Valpolicella, because of our interest of Italian wine. On our way we found San Giorgio - a small village in the comune (municipality) Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, in the Italian region Veneto (located about 120 km west of Venice and about 15 km northwest of Verona).

From the hill top of San Giorgio, there is an excellent panorama, with the whole Valpolicella valley spread out below. On a clear day, the view spreads from the Sermione peninsula on Lake Garda to the beginnings of the Apennine Mountains, and the whole of Verona.

We fell in love with this beautiful and romantic place and went back the year after..... First we got married in Verona and then we spent our honeymoon in San Giorgio.

The village is located on the top of the hill, surrounded by fields where, in addition to vineyards, olive and cherry trees predominate

San Giorgio is well known for it's magnificent barbaric-romanesque church

Bell tower - Campanile - rebuilt in the twelfth century after the great earthquake in 1117

The monastery - also rebuilt after the earthquake

San Giorgio is part of the town of Sant'Ambrogio (right down the hill)

Panoramic view .... Lake Garda can also be seen

 Valpolicella valley
